Bloomsburg Defeats Columbia Union in Women's Basketball
Box Score
BLOOMSBURG - Kelly Joyce (Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) scored 19 points, 12 coming in the second half as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team came from behind to defeat non-conference foe Columbia Union 54-51 on Saturday evening.
The Huskies, who picked up their sixth victory of the season, trailed by four points with only 3:42 remaining in the second half before Lauren Healy (Glenmoore/Owen J. Roberts) knocked down a jumper to cut the lead to two. After a Columbia Union turnover, Joyce's layup attempt on the other end was blocked, but she managed to get her own rebound and was immediately fouled. Joyce sank a pair of free throws to tie the game at 51 all with 2:12 remaining.
After the Huskies forced another Columbia Union turnover, Stephanie Jones (Philadelphia/Manor College) found Colleen Kegerreis (Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) underneath for a tough layup to take a 2 point advantage, 53-51, with 1:29 remaining. Columbia Union would miss on the front end of a one-and-one, while Joyce would get to the line at the other end, sinking one of two free throws to extend the Huskies lead to three. Columbia Union had one final shot to tie, but Jada Richardson missed a three-pointer with four seconds remaining, sealing the win for the Huskies.
The Huskies were stifling on defense, holding the Pioneers to just 21.9 percent shooting for the game. The Huskies would trail by as many as eight points in the second half before Joyce and Kegerreis would key the second half rally.
Kegerreis had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies, while Healy scored 11 points as well. Richardson led Columbia Union with 24 points.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday for "Pack the House" night, when they host Mansfield. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
